Japanese Language Spotlighted on TV

Truth be told, we don't watch much TV...probably one of the few bicultural homes in America that is too busy to even bother with cable.   However, with Japanese on the rise thanks to the import and consumption of anime and manga by teens and adults across the nation, it is not such a big surprise that some of the popular or trying to be popular shows are adding Japanese into their show storylines.  While we're glad to see the language getting recognized like other shows before it, we have another actress butchering the beautiful Japanese language on TV.

On Apr 15, 2009 during Tori Spelling's return to '90210' , she spouts of Japanese on her cell phone and in a restaurant. While we giver her props for partaking of fresh octopus or squid sushi,  (You go, girl,)  in truth her pronuncation might not have been so bad had she simply slowed down.  Yet, common to the novice Japanese learner, students tend to want to speak Japanese too fast before they are ready.  Yet, we give her proprops for for eating fresh squid or octopus or some other rubbery sushi on screen. More importantly, the basis for the language usage was at least more plausible than the last time we recall it being used on tv by a non-native speaker.

On November 17, 2002, actress Jennifer Garner spoke Japanese as spygirl Syndey Bristow.  She dressed as a geisha and said a few words of Japanese to supposedly pass by security guards.  Sadly, anyone listening with any degree of Japanese fluency just wouldn't buy those few lines of no where close pronunciation.

In truth, to date the best use of Japanese we've seen was by folks by non-native actor was Richard Gere in the 1991 film, Rapsody in August.  Appropriate to the scene in which he was acting, the nature of the dialog allowed him to speak the lines with pause which was appropriate to the emotion being conveyed in which one would pause in Japanese for emphasis.

To wrap up, we're hopeful Donna's Japanese will get better as this remake show progresses...

The February Weekend Warrior Class explored traditional Japanese architecture and interior design via a fascinating Andon Lamp Making Workshop.  KC connected with the artisans via the Indy Japan Network. And the results of student design in the hands of Hawkins creative carpenter and craftsmanship were phenominal. A learning experience for everyone about the amount of time and careful skill required to develop a real, traditional lamp!  As you can see the results are beautiful.
